International Children’s Day celebration. «Wizard of the Emerald City» performance.

International Children’s Day is one of the oldest international holidays and is widely recognized in the countries worldwide to promote the welfare of children and to celebrate childhood. It was first proclaimed by the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in 1925. International Day for Protection of Children, observed in many countries as Children’s Day on June 1 since 1950, was established by the Women’s International Democratic Federation on its congress in Moscow (22 November 1949). The community of Russian Women “Rossiyanka” celebrated Children’s day by arranging a performance of «Wizard of Emerald City» by the russian children in the office of “Rossiyanka” on June 1, 2013.There was an amazing turn out of families, friends and children gathered together for a performance to mark the celebration of the International Day for Protection of Children. The performers were the children attending russian language courses and their parents.

It has been two years since Rossiyanka started Russian language course for bilingual children (Russian children having parents from different ethnic backgrounds or living in bilingual environment.) Involving children to the participation in amateur theatrical performances is a part of the training programme. Public performances are fun and help children to improve language skills, train their memory, feel free and confident while being in the limelight. Children also learn how to control their voice and movements, gain on-the-stage and dramatic art skills. Every child is talented and gifted, and the participation in theatrical performances helps the teachers to reveal exceptional abilities and unique personality of each child.

The children are always happy to take part in “play and learn” activities to show off what they had learned at their Russian language classes. The students of the Russian language course have already staged 3 plays since they started their study: “Barmaley”, “Golden Key” and ’”Wizard of the Emerald City”. All the plays were adapted to the age and language level of each of the participants. The coaches and some parents helped prepare the stage costumes and decorations for each play.

The performance ’”Wizard of the Emerald City” was staged by Russian language teacher – Kudakova Elena Vladimirovna who also was a scriptwriter for the play. The «Wizard of Emerald City» is a comfort story to play for many children because they are so familiar with the characters and the settings. The children loved to dress up and act out the adventures of the main character girl Elly and her faithful friend Totoshka. All the children were well prepared and looked very impressive in their stage costumes. There was a professional cameraman and a photographer to capture the children having fun at what was for many their first performance ever.

Learning through play helps children become familiar with and understand how other people feel when they are happy, sad, angry or lonely and how it is like to live without heart and courage. During the rehearsals and the preparation for the performance of ”Wizard of the Emerald City”, the teachers tried to create for the children a fun-filled naughty atmosphere which afterwards helped them to form a friendly stage team and was reflected in the children’s performance. The young artists were supported by their younger brothers and sisters – the small students of the Russian language course- who brilliantly performed the characters of tiny manchkins and flying monkeys. They loved their part and all the kids did such a fabulous job! The children’s’ parents also added some fun to the play and enriched it with excellent acting revealing their own “hidden talents”. It was truly a fantastic performance!

After the performance, the young artists were warmly applauded by an audience of parents, guests and members of the Community of Russian women “Rossiyanka”.

Dear children! We wish you a peaceful life and every success for the future!
